75 - Visit the Cemetery Man in Dellamorte Dellamore

You spoke about the poor 'looping' (you used a more technical term that I can't remember, but Bill Murray uses 'loop' in Life Aquatic and I only know anything about the world through him) in this film, and I think there are some oddities about Italy that may factor into the oddities in the production. For one thing, Italians dub everything in theaters. They have renowned professionals whose fame is based on their dubbing skill, and thus they don't suffer from the same sorts of bad experiences that American dubs tend to inflict on English language dubs. Thus, even if there were a horde of audio problems, the Italian producers probably didn't really mind for their own homegrown population, because it was probably getting dubbed anyway. Another oddity about the Italians is that they have a long history of disregard for lip-sync, even in their own films, at least back in the time of Fellini which was well after the capability of perfectly syncing sound to image, and Fellini often had the actors simply mouth something - anything - that they would later loop something over in post production. He was actually writing the dialogue in post production for some parts. How much their being accustomed to voices being out of sync with lips due to the omnipresence of dubbed foreign films factors into this I don't know, but for an Italian producer to see poor lip sync was probably perfectly fine by him. Thus, I think there are some strange cultural factors that arise from an English language Italian production that lend some peculiarities to the film, although the abysmal sound quality, if it's not simply a matter of the DVD being poorly done, just seems like poor technique. Whatever the case, this film sounds like an oddity. I've been recommended it, but nobody warned me just how strange it was. Thanks for the review!

Hey John!
Thanks for the low down. Outside of Fulci (which was also poorly dubbed for the region 1 DVD), I'm really not very familiar with Italian cinema. It makes sense though that a culture which gets most of it's films imported, wouldn't have as big a deal with things like lip sync, I just never would've thought it would become a convention of their cinema LOL.
Oh, and the term we used was "ADR" which usually stands for "automated dialogue replacement", but is most often called dubbing.

Fulci before Fellini? I'm still waiting for the musical remake of a Fulci film, myself. As for Fellini, I don't want to go back to life before 8½. It's so much better afterward.
